    Debt collectors
I owe a debt to Starwood Vacation Owners (timeshare). They placed the debt for collection with a debt collector in 2005. A "second" debt collector has tried to collect on this same in 2007. My question is: How can two debt collectors collect on the same debt? THIS APPEARS ON MY CREDIT REPORT AS IF I OWE TWO COMPANIES FOR THE SAME DEBT? IS THIS LEGAL?

I have had the same thing happen with a credit card company. The original creditor gave up on collecting the debt themselves so they sold the debt to another company. This must somehow be legal because they do it all the time. The debt is now reactivated and can also be charged interest fees, overdue/late fees, and once the new debt that they have created for you exceeds your credit limit you can also be charged an over the limit fee. This made the amount of debt skyrocket. They still harass me and it has been almost 20 years. No statute of limitation applies as long as it gets sold & renewed every 5-7 years. When I checked my credit report I observed the same type of misleading debt profile and disputed it. The investigation into the issue lead back to the original creditor.

It is perfectly legal for a company to sel the debt to another firm, However the collector should have changed on the credit report not added as a different debt. Report the error to the credit bureau and have them change it.
