Just picked up a really nice new chandelier. Takes 5 standard size bulbs.

After wrestling the thing up and mounting it to the ceiling I realized that there's no way to tell which wire is for black and which is for white. They are both insulated in black. One side has a print down it ID'ing the gauge and manufacturing. I rummaged through the box and found a white piece of tape which I think was on one of the wires but had fallen off during un-packing.

Is there any way to tell which wire I hook to which? Does it even matter for lighting?

Look closely at both wires, one will be ribbed, or dashed or marked somehow, while the other will be plain. The marked one is the neutral, and should connect to the white in the ceiling box.

The only difference I can see is that one has writing on it - I think it's the manufacturer and the gauge of wire... otherwise there's no difference between them.

That's it, the one with writing is considered as identified as the neutral.
