We need to install our sink and the dishwasher, the existing drain pipe for this is currently blocking the dishwasher in the back. I need to know if I can change the drain from the current pipe into a 2 inch vent pipe. Tough question to ask and hard to describe. Any help would be wonderful.

Good morning Swanberg,
I don't understand the question. You have a vent not over 5" away from the sink trap. And if you converted the present drain into a vent what would drain the sink and dishwasher?
To my way of thinking you are faced with two options. You may recess the present drain back into the wall or you may fur out the dishwasher a few inches into the kitchen and back it up against the existing drain.
Or, am I missing something? Regards, Tom

First, the builder put the vent well OVER 5" from the sink trap (we're talking 2 feet with a two foot pipe extending out from the wall). With the remodel, we are installing a TOL Miele dishwasher with less than 1" clearance from the wall.. . which poses the problem we have. It will stick too far out.

The builder placed the vent (which he also used to tie into the toilet drain) to the left of a 2.5" drain from the upstairs master bath that drains from the master tub.

Problem #2: just to the right of both pipes is a kitchen window with what looks like a support 2x4 "stud" going up through the second floor. All of this is to the left of where the dishwasher and sink will go. (Dishwasher flanked directly to the left of the sink.)

The first plumber said he wouldn't weaken the integrity of that 2x4 by drilling a hole big enough to run a drain through that stud. (By the way, the window is being replaced with a much smaller window - decreasing by nearly 9" - to make room for more cabinetry.)

We need to be able to somehow fur back the pipe, preferably into the wall and then just extending out for the sink cabinet.. . if that is possible to do.

Any help is appreciated!

In addition, I quess my question is can I T into the 2" vent pipe that is making the 1 1/2 go around. The vent has the tub draining into it at the second floor and I have been told that it is against code to have a drain into the same pipe from the 1st floor. If I can T into the 2" vent pipe, would it create a problem clearing out my sink catch thus creating a sewer gas problem?

This is where we do a little creative thinking. To begain with we notch,( not drill) into 2X4 studs all the time to get a 2" drain to a stack. What do you mean by, "can I T into the 2" vent pipe that is making the 1 1/2 go around?" What's the 1 1/2" connected to and why is it going around? While it's true that you can't discharge a major fixture past a unvented minor one, what you could do is vent the kitchen sink just after the trap with a AAV,( Air Admittance Valve) and connect the drain any where that's handy. A AAV is a spring loaded mechanical vent. To check out AAV's click on; http://www.studor.com/homeowners.htm
The AAV will connect to the wall stub out with a vent tee just ahead of the trap. Sound like a plan? Regards, Tom

That pipe behind the dishwasher ( called "dirt-arm" ) is there for reason: it is there to by-pass Kings stud and Trimmer (window framing). You cannot drill through those for you would compromise structural value of that wall. This is true even more if there is 2nd story above.

You can install new 1 1/2" San-Tee, angle it at 45 degrees towards the sink, glue in 1 1/2" street 45, keep it as tight against the bare stud as possible ( remove drywall), keep this pipe it about 5" above the floor ( D/W has about 6" high hollow space on the bottom ) and run your pipe to your sink.

Depending on what D/W you have but D/W are from 21" (some US models ) to 24" deep ( Bosh, Viking, Miele... ). Depending on what brand D/W you have, you should be able to do it.
