    Why don't you give us a guess as to what your answer is. It is against site policy to do your homework for you.

    We don't mind helping, you just have to show us that you have at least attempted to figure it out on your own first.

    What is the first step you would take to calculate this? :)

    You'll need to define a variable for "the number." Then you write an equation that reflects the information stated verbally in the problem. Finally you solve your equation for your variable. If you want to show your work I'll be happy to critique it for you.

    solving inequalities in one variable -
    y+4 is less than 3

    x = -8

    "the result" can be replaced by "=". See if that's any better.

    x^2+3x=12
    2x^2+4x-3=0
    f(x)=x^2-4x+7

    Wow, I am not sure what the rest of your are doing but all you have to do is take the words and write them in math form, for example:

    the sum of -4 and 5 times a number is multiplied by 3 translates into:

    (-4+5x)3

    Where the "sum" is what is inside the parenthesis and "5x" is the '5 times a number" since you don't know what that number is.

    When you do the second half of the statement, try to do the same thing and you will use the same variable "x" because it says that the result is 212 less than 7 times that number.

    Hope this helps

    First we are defining the unknown "number" as x

    And now here's the answer.

    (-4+5x)3=7x-212
    -12+15x=7x-212
    15x-7x=-212+12
    8x=-200
    x=-200/8
    x=-25

    Unknown number is "-25"

    To see if its correct replace the x as -25 in the equation (-4+5x)3=7x-212

    [-4+(5X-25)]3=(7X-25)-212
    -12-375=-175-212
    -387=-387

    therefore we are correct:)
