It's a monthly subscription to access their servers. You have to pay to play.

I know that, but some of my friends found a way to get it for free.

    How?

Ask them. We won't help you do illegal activities here.

Perhaps they're just running the free trials. Free trials lasts for 14 days, has a level cap of 20, and no email system. As long as you keep getting the trial keys, you can keep playing. Unfortunately, you will have to keep making new characters.

If you know anyone who works in the game (What are they called... GMs?), they might be able to give you a free account. A friend of mine went to school with someone who works in the game, and he's got free access. That, or a free trial, is about the only LEGAL way you can get it for free. (Unless you just have someone else pay for you)
