    Moen Single Faucet Shower
I just moved in to my place, and the shower knob is pointing straight up. If I turn it to the right I have ridiculously cold water. If I turn it to the left I have ridiculously hot water, unless I go as far left as possible, at which point it is bearable to shower and not scolding. Any ideas on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

If it is a 'chateau', you pull the handle out to turn on and left for hot and right for cold. If it is a 'positemp' you turn left to turn on cold and continue left to get warmer then hot.
It sounds like a positemp and the handle is put on wrong or the cartridge is backward. Try to remove the handle and simply reinstall pointing down.

Should I turn the water off first if I take the handle off? I'm just not sure if the cartridge is held in with a clip or something. Cause I don't want to take that screw out and get soaked...

Water must be off and valve opened and all pressure released before taking clip out.
