I have a old york gas pac. It tries to light three times then trips out on fault. What causes this to happen.

The unit is not lighting off because the ignition circuit or pilot circuit has a problem. It is designed to lock out after so many tries. I would seek professional help or you will be replacing parts you do not need to.
