Hi,
I have recently bough a dongle for my home computer. I have plugged it into the usb port and installed all correctly. I got this because my laptop has wireless built in and I wanted to get internet through the dondle (wireless lan stick) on my home computer. I have set up a network but when I try to connect on the laptop it says there is limited or no connectivity. I'm not sure what I have to do as I'm new to this sort of stuff. My laptop says it cannot renew my ip address but I don't know where to go to renew or change it. Please can anyone help?? :confused: :confused:

You need a DHCP server to setup IP's on your network. You also need to setup NAT to share the internet connection

How do you setup NAT? I got the dongle working at first but I had to put it onto AP mode?
The reason it stopped was because it got unplugged and since then it will not reconnect. My laptop can find the connection but when I connect it sometimes says limited or no connectivity. Or it has said automatic or manual. But it still doesn't let me access the internet.

Are you trying to setup an adhoc wireless connection directly between the two? If so, that is not easy to do. You are better off getting a router.

NAT = network address translation...

what operating systems are you using?

you might need ICS or NAD depending on what operating system

They don't NEED to do this. They can use static IPs. Also, it appears they are trying to just connect the two, not necessarily share an Internet connection.

He could use static IP's, but without knowing the OS we don't know if he needs ICS or NAT setup...

He also states he wants to use the internet connection on his other PC.

So, it's like this?
You have a desktop computer with an internet connection, and you bought a USB wireless dongle to plug into it.
You have a laptop that has wireless already, and you want to surf the internet wirelessly, using the desktop computer, and that's why you bought the dongle.

If so, then do this (I'll assume you use windows xp):
Go to the control panel (and if you haven't already, click on "show classic view" on the left side), and into the Network Connections folder. Right click on the one you're using for an internet connection, and go to properties. On the tab that's on the far right side of the window that comes up (I think it's the 'advanced' tab), there should be an option to share the internet connection. Select the option that says you want to share, and if there's a box that asks which adapter you want to share with, choose the wireless one. Click OK. It will ask if you want to set the address to 192.168.0.1, say yes.

If you've already got the wireless network set up, then the laptop shuold be able to have internet access within about 5 minutes (that's how long it waits between broadcasts for a DHCP server, if it didn't find one in the first place).

If it still doesn't work, thenl et us know the following:
What operating system is on the laptop, and on the desktop?
How did you set up the wireless network? Was it ad-hoc?
On the laptop, and the desktop, if you double click the wireless connection icon, down by the clock, it should say a signal strength. What is the strength?

If you have the firewall and encryption on at your router, you will not be able to make the connection. So, you may wish to get the IP address of the router, use this as your URL, and it will bring up your various categories of router connections including your firewall and encryption. Try turning off the firewall and the encryption to see if you are able to make the connection. FYI, here is an excellent website that deals with wireless:
