My washer stopped washing so I opened it up and did some troubleshooting. Looks like there is issue with motor. It does not start itself when I pull the timer knob. It just makes a humming sound sits there. However if I spin it by hand it starts rotating and then keeps on running. Curiously, it spins in which ever direction I start it by hand. Clockwise or anticlockwise. Someone on another forum suggested that the motor starting winding could be bad. But I want to make sure before I buy a new motor as the shop near my house will not return the electrical parts once I leave their shop even though I don't use them at all.

Initially I thought the starting cap was bad but it was not. So I want make sure that it is the issue with the motor and not the timer knob etc before I burn more money.

I am a mech. Engg and my friend is an electrical Engg. So please susggest some tests (continuity etc.) that we can actually perform instead of giving vague suggestions like the people on the othe forum. If there is a circuit diagrame of the motor it will help greatly.

Disconnet the motor leads. Test for continuity from the common to run and common and start. Then test from run and start. Then check each lead to ground. Should have continuity from the common to windings and none from leads to ground

Ok... So I did continiuity tests on the motor as described here.

All the tests were positive. I found the continuity and resistance between terminals as described. So I guess the motor is good. So the next step is to measure the voltage I am getting at the terminals. Quick question... The voltage between corrosponding terminals (e.g. Start winding terminals Yellow and Black, High speen winding Blue and White etc) should be 120 in each case... correct?
