We'll try and help but it would help if we knew what version of Windows you are using.
Well it could be a number of different things that are causing your PC to not shutdown properly. The most likely cause will be a program or service that doesn't close down and release itself from memory properly. Best way to test this is to start the PC in Safe Mode. If you can shut down your PC in safe mode with no problems, then it'll be a process/service refusing to shut down.
Next time you try and shutdown and this happens, try hitting CTRL+ALT+DEL. If there are any applications/processes shown that are still running, close them down one by one. Make a note of the name of each one as you close it down. Chances are as you close a certain one down this will unfreeze your PC and it will shut down. With the name of the program causing the problem we can start to fix the problem.
Restart the PC and when Windows has loaded click on Start >> Run and type in "MSCONFIG". Take a look on the startup and services tag looking for something with that name of the trouble maker. If you find it, disable it.
It might also be worth running some spyware removal tools. A couple can be found in my signature.
Hi,
I need to know your windows version, such as 98, XP, etc.
Thank you,
fredg
Sorry, it is windows ME
I have noticed that a "thing" called wuauboot is running and when I close that then the PC also freezes. Am not sure what is going on
Thanks
Wuauboot is part of Windows Update (http://www.liutilities.com/products/...rary/wuauboot/). There is also a piece of spyware that uses the same name though - perhaps this is the problem?
Can you try two things for me:
1. Download some of the spyware tools in my signature and run those (Adaware, Spybot, etc.).
2. Click on Start >> Run. Type in MSConfig. Let me know if you see Wuauboot anyway in the startup section. It shouldn't be there so if it is - then we have some spyware causing the problem.
