    How to get rid of squeaky stairs there is a lot of room from underneath to work .:confused:

    The squeaking is cause by the tread of the step moving up and down on the nails. The nail holes have worn and loosened.
    Adding nails now should be driven in, two or more, at opposing angles to provide a better grip between the tread and riser.
    If you have carpet, spread the nap slightly and use sheetrock screws.

    Inspect from underneath while someone walks up and down the stairs. Place you hand flat on some of the surfaces, you will be able to feel the movement. Glue and screw and boards that show movement. I would drill the step board before driving the screws home.
