The directions are right on the spool when you turn the weedeater upside down. You can either respool or buy a new spool. And it isn't string, its plastic filament.

In most cases you will see a hole or screw driver like slot in the end of the shaft. Insert a nail or screw driver into the slot and turn the whole head counterclockwise.

ballengerb1 is right on track there. The head turns counterclockwise. This is what gets a lot of people messed up, but remember:
    Righty tighty,
    Lefty loosey.

Direction depends on the model. I have a MightyLite and the manual has a different direction for the curved shaft than the straight shaft. Mine, the curved, turns counter clockwise. The straight shaft goes clockwise. The filament turns different directions, too.

MarcG, are you sure about your Homelite trimmer head being unscrewed clockwise?

Mine, model 26CS, unscrews counter-clockwise, but the instructions for the MightyLite 26SS (straight shaft) definitely say to unscrew the spool retainer clockwise. I have the manual in front of me.

Another difference is that my CS is a single-string and the SS is double. The strings rotate in opposite directions, too, which accounts for the retainer thread.
