I took this quote from Menopause Frequently Asked QuestionQuote:
How long do the symptoms of menopause last?
In most women, the symptoms of menopause last between 6 months to 2 years. In a minority of women, hot flashes can last for the rest of their life.
Here is a page for home remedies for the symptoms, also including a list of the symptoms : Home Remedies for Menopause - Treating Menopause with Natural Home Remedies
Your mother in law can also try hormone replacement therapy that will take care of some of those symptoms. Here is some info on that : Menopause and Hormone Replacement Therapy
I began hot flashes at 52, quite severe except not at night thank goodness, which can be a huge issue. However, they continued pretty intensely for about four years. Also I began showing symptoms of anxiety and had one severe panic attack which sent me to the E.R. thinking I was having a heart attack. Once I began taking anti-anxiety meds. Things got better, even the mood swings. Not saying that's what your relative needs, just my personal experience. The flashes eventually went away without HRT, but even now - six years later - I will still get an occasional one.
I have been told they last anything up to ten years. I have started the menopause and have had terrible symptoms. Sweats, migraines, increase of anxiety. Meds and natural things can help so I have been told but I have yet to investigate this. She's not alone.
Menopause symptoms can last anywhere from 2-10 years but usually they last for 3-4 years and then decreases.
