Literal power and influence - the gubment.
Pseudo-power and influence - media. The media has the power to make people do silly things like care about Paris Hilton and wonder if Jennifer Aniston is hurt by Brad and Angelina's relationship. The media has the power to make people "care" in general. If the gubment says something is important, but the media thinks its not, the general public will never hear about it, and won't care.
Technically, the media should be the fourth branch of government, with the legislature, the executive and the judicial branches looking out for it when its rights are being trampled upon and also pushing it back when the media goes too far.
Does the government control the media? No. The government controls what it will say to the media.
As for cable news channels and talk radio being influenced by the government, these organizations are more likely to be ruled by something bigger -- money.
This can also be said for newspapers as well.
You also have to realize that all of these media formats, newspaper, television, radio, are owned either by billionaires who may or may not have worked in journalism or companies. These people or organizations do not care about journalism, only about money. The result is the people do not get the full story.
Can the media arrest you? Or make it public.
Can the media take money from your paycheck?
Can the media authorize war?
Can the media take away property?
Its no contest.
Grace and Peace
If you could get FreeSpeechTV(FSTV), you would see the difference in structured/suggested news that is broadcast and the independent coverage of the same event. It would be quite eye-opening.Quote:

The government can influence your physical circumstance, while the media is much more well placed to influence your mental circumstance, i.e. what you think about, what you talk about, what your opinions are.
If this is homework then you should concentrate on discussing the differences in how they can both influence, and then decide on which is a more powerful influence in your life.
But when the government owns the media what then?
Fox News Channel controversies - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The few fox news reports that I've seen have been hilarious. (that being said, I've probably only seen the more hilarious ones).
Government actually looks towards the media for help.
Government. They control what the media shows and prints. They are an organization just like any other company.
Then you have socialism
I think they can both lie equally to the people, however the government can carry out their lies, were as the media have controlled lies.. by the Government.
So it's got to be the Government... their word being law... so to speak
Well basically most of the major media outlets that we watch everyday are all owned by the government. So would in fact be the government.
