I am 18, living in my grandmother's house. She has allowed a "friend" to stay for awhile due to the friend losing her old house. This lady has been here for over 3 or more months and my grandmother has recently gone to the hospital for falling. This lady took her purse and was gone all day and claimed she went to the hospital to give it to my grandmother, but she has not seen the "friend" come by once. When we called the cops, they said they couldn't do anything, can somebody please help? This lady is basically trying to destroy my grandmother's life. Isn't there something I can do NOW and get that purse back, and get that damn lady in jail and THAN go to court to clear it all out?

I take it you haven't gotten the purse back? Were there any credit cards, checks, or bank cards that you could trace the activity of? Also, does she pay rent or own the property in someway? As long as you give her 30 days notice you can evict her but if she's not paying rent I'm pretty sure you can just make her leave with her property. I might be wrong about that but maybe someone can back me up.

You may want to voice your concerns to your grandmother, if you think it won't stress her out. Ultimately I believe she's the one that's going to have to press charges or try to get the 'friend' out of the house. Bless you for your concern and keep us posted!

Even if you intuitively "know" that this "friend" stole your grandmother's purse, you have no concrete evidence and would never be able to get a conviction in a court of law. I agree with Emy that it is imperative for your grandmother to cancel any credit cards she may have had in the purse and stop payment on any blank checks that may have been in there. If her social security card was in there then she'll have to notify the social security administration. If she had a driver's license in there then she'll have to notify DMV. And I agree that this friend should be compelled to vacate immediately.
