Everybody knows antifreeze kills pets? Kids too! There is a less toxic propylene glycol formula available. Propylene glycol is actually used in small amounts in some pet chows.

I changed the antifreeze in my car last night. I used Prestone Low Tox from Advanced Auto Parts. It was $12 for a gallon, maybe the same as regular. Sierra and Evans also make a propylene glycol based antifreeze. It is somewhat less effective than the ethylene glycol. Still at the usual 50/50 it is good down to -26 degrees F. That should cover most of the US. It not, you can use more and go down to -76. It seems a small price to protect out pets.

The car is an 02 Cavalier and still had the original factory fill and was slightly past the recommended change. It never leaked a drop. In over 100,000 miles I never added anything. The original looked OK and is packed up in a old laundry detergent bottle to be recycled. I try to take care of my pets, car, and environment.

Labman that is good to know, I will spread the word to the people I know. I am so glad that something safer has come out. Cats esp. like the sweetness of the anti-freeze.

The stuff has been available for at least 10 years, maybe 20. With as many kids as get poisoned, I have no idea why the ethylene glycol hasn't been banned. I have heard a teaspoon will kill a cat.

My husband may already use it, as you can tell I stay away from the automotive section. Honestly I have never heard of a child being poisoned from it only cats. I think I will drop a line to one of the Enquirer writers they may do a story on it. Esp at this time of the year when people are getting their cars ready for winter. We have a section in our paper that covers auto issue's. I look forward to hearing if other members have heard of this or if I am just in the dark ages.

I don't know why the original formulas haven't been banned either. I am always checking my car for leaks. In my area, there are so many stray cats. It only takes a few licks on a hot day. Very upsetting.

It puzzles me why it has taken until 1995 for people to start adding denatonium to antifreeze. It was discovered in 1958!

Adding the bitter stuff to the ethylene glycol is a big help.
