    Old Student Loan
I have a friend who is a Viet Nam Veteran. He was drafted while he was in college. When he went into the military he had about $5,000 in student loans. He was in the military for about six years. Got out and went to work. About 6 years ago he went to buy a car and found out that with interest he now owes about $25,000 on that loan. He is now 55 years old and working two jobs now trying to pay it off.
My question is Is there any help for veterans that served in a war to help pay off student loans? It just seem a shame that you get taken out of college, fight in a war spend time in the military only to find that you owe all this interest on a loan from years ago.
Is there any place this guy can go for help?

He should appeal directly to the VA.

Veterans Benefits Administration (VBA) (U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs)

    I hope this helps.

Try to remain patient... there will be transfers and red tape.

If he still has contact by way of repayment, there's most likely a contact number or representative. I'd start with this step.
I'm going to remain positive in the hopes that having been repaying some, they may be able to negotiate at least some of the balance.
    Good luck.

Not to take anything away from veterans, but there is some personal responsibility here. He knew he borrowed the money. He had ample opportunity to pay it back at reasonable terms without letting the interest cause it to baloon. Why did he let it go?
