The exterior (metal) is hot to touch. The product inside is still cold however. This is a unit that I have in my garage for extra refrigerator/freezer space. I can't afford to loose food!

Probably the heat you are feeling is from the yoder loop. It is copper tubing with hot gas flowing through it to reduce condensation.
