    Safety Issue, Chandelier Installation
Recently we purchased a chandelier for our daughter's room. The chandelier had a standard cord and plug, approximately 18 inches in length. We were told that the reason is had the plug, was for display in a lighting showroom, and that for home installation, we should slice off the plug, and simply connect the negative and positive wires to the ceiling wiring. I removed the existing fixture and followed these instructions. It works, but I am concerned there is no ground wire connection from the chandelier. Is this safe? Thank you

If there is no metallic parts on the fixture, then a ground wire is not needed.

If the fixture came from the manufacturer with the two wire cord, then it is allowed to be plugged in and used with out a ground wire grounding the metallic portions of the socket and fixture. The UL listing of this fixture will be voided if the plug is cut off, if it came made that way.

Once the fixture is connected directly to the building wiring, then a ground wire is needed to ground the metallic parts.

Did the fixture come with the round canopy and mounting parts to allow it to be installed onto an outlet box?

Thank you for the quick reply. The fixture is ceramic, and crystal. So hopefully it is okay. It did come with a canopy ,but no mounting parts. When I called the manufacturer they told me to simply cut the plug off and mount the wires into the existing outlet box. I sliced the cord down the middle after cutting off the plug. I am hoping this is safe. Fixture is in our toddlers room. Thank you again.

OK, sounds good. When you connect the wires note that the cord will have one wire identified as the neutral, this may be ribs or notches or some other markings on only one of the wires. This wire must connect to the white in the outlet box.
