    Need serious help... anyone please
I've moved back to college and been here for 2 weeks. My internet has ran smoothly and very efficiently. The 2 main things I use my computer for anyway is MSN Messenger and the internet. Well, last night my computer rebooted and for some reason my anti-virus was turned off and I think some stuff got onto my computer. So I turned it back on, ran the virus scan, and nothing showed up. I then ran my spyware and saw that there was over 500 items so I quickly removed those. Then I discovered that my internet wouldn't open my homepage and my MSN wouldn't log me on. Needless to say, my local area connection in the bottom right corner showed I was connect and running at full speed. So I turned the computer off and rebooted one more time and the systme shutdown associated with the sasser worm popped up, so I stopped it and tried to remove the worm. I rebooted one more time and ran various worm removal tools which told me I had no such thing in my system. I ran virus scan and there were no viruses. I ran the spyware/adware scans and there are none of those... but regardless I still can't log onto the internet and my MSN Messenger won't log on. I know this isn't an extreme emergency but it's something I need fixed for school purposes. The more quick the better. I'm thinking there may have been something that automatically shut down that I don't know about and have no clue how to reset. Any help is appreciated as this is driving me nuts having to use my rommy's laptop. Anyone please?

Are you connected to the school's system? If so, I suggest you report the problem to the IT people immediately and get help from them. They may be blocking you because they detected the worm.

That is a possibility but I doubt that's the case however. This same thing happened last year, getting the sasser, and after I removed it everything was fine again. I hadn't thought of that possibility though. I'll be sure and ask them and yes I'm connected to the school's server. The tech I talked to, though, didn't mention that this might be a possibility. Thanks though. Any other ideas anyone?

Might not be the answer your looking for,but if various anti-virus tools have'nt worked, why not click-on this link to Microsoft's Malicious Software removal tool:

    http://www.microsoft.com/security/ma...e/default.mspx

Every time you use Windows update, your PC is cleaned by this little tool,so that any Windows updates are installed onto a clean machine. At least that's the theory anyway.

Scroll halfway down the page,click-on the clean PC button, agree to Microsoft's terms (it's free, and without any hastle),then as the program does it stuff, wait for the report at the end.The whole process should not take more than a minute.

Only works with Windows XP,2000,or Server 2003 only.

If you have problems using the clean PC link button using Firefox, you will have to use Internet Explorer I'm afraid,as you do with Microsoft updates anyway. You don't have to manually use this tool,as it works automatically every time you update your system.

What tech and what did they say? Also how could you be infected TWICE? Didn't you learn from the last time?

    Internet Connection
    Hi,
When you talked with the Tech at school about using the school's server, did he/she go over the Internet Connection Configurations with you?
I am assuming you did talk about it, but if you didn't, call them back, and be sure your configurations are correct for your server you use.
Spyware could have changed the settings.
    Best of luck,

At least that's what a large portion of Fred's answers seem to say.

Thanks a lot for all the help guys. I went to talk with the Tech and he told me to type cmd into the Run menu and then type in ipconfig to see what IP{ address my comp. was trying to connect to. COme to find out it wasn't right. So I ran WinSokFix or something like that and it repaired my connection. Everything's good now and I'm posting this on MY computer. Never thought the internet was so important until you go a few days without it... kind of sad lol. But thanks for all the help anyway and I'm sure I'll be back sometime when something else goes wrong.

Hmm, that's curious. Does the school require that you hardcode your IP? Most such installations require that you set your system to automatically obtain an IP. Its possible that some virus or spyware changed that, though I don't see why.

Glad you got it fixed though.
