Considering buying at 1997 chevy calvalier?
"if this car has been sitting for3-3 1/2 year off the road and not running (145,000 miles), what should I be aware of when going to start it this car and other preventive maintenance repairs?"

Well, you're going to need to look at all the rubber components in the engine for rot. You should also change the oil filter, air filter and replace the oil. If the car hasn't been drained of all the normal engine fluids, you will need to look for leaks after the engine runs for a while. I'm probably missing some things. Good luck.

Siphon or pump out all of the old gas and change the fuel filter, before you try to start it. Once you know it starts okay, change:

    . Oil (5W-30)
    . Oil filter
. Transmission fluid and filter--likely Dexron III (be sure to drop and clean pan)
    . Power steering fluid
. Brake fluid--flush complete system and replace with Valvoline SynPower
. Antifreeze--flush and replace with a 50/50 mixture of DexCool and distilled water
    . Air filter
    . PCV valve
    . Spark plugs (ACDelco only)
    . Tires

Examine condition of radiator hoses, heater hoses, belts, and vacuum lines. Clean battery cables. Spray locks with WD-40.
