My brother travels to Asia quite frequently and he doesn't have anything other then a passport. Some countries have restrictions on how long you can stay in a country without a visa of some sort.

    Visa Requirements
CIBT, Inc. - Visa Quick Check for U.S. Citizens
Here is a quick guide to countries that require visa from US citizens.

China, People's Republic of (PRC) -Visa
    China Visa Information
U.S. Canadian and European citizens need a visa to enter China. Currently, 30-day tourist visas are the standard, but 60-day and 90-day visas can be issued upon request with your initial application. When you go to apply for your visa, note on your application whether you would like to be issued a 30, 60, or 90-day tourist visa so that the Consulate staff can oblige you. For volunteers planning to stay longer than 90 days, our staff will get the extension visa for you once you are in China. If you wish to do this, please bring a 2 x 2 Passport photo with you as this will expedite the process. This is a common and relatively simple process.

In order to apply for a visa, you will need a passport, visa application, a passport photograph, and a fee of approximately $50 American ($30 other countries) for a single-entry visa. Multiple-entry visas are $75 American ($50 other countries). The single entry visa is only valid for 90 days from date of issue; therefore, please do not apply for your visa more than 3 months before your departure.

Non-U.S. Canadian or European citizens should locate the consulate closest to you. You can find a complete listing of consulates around the world at http://www.embassyworld.com/embassy/china.cfm.

Japan-Passport (90 days) Allows the traveler to stay in country for a maximum of 90 days.
"A passport is required as of January 23, 2007 to return to the United States from abroad."

Visa has to be renewed for each visit,
It expires on the given due date.:)
