Breaking Lease Due to Safety and Family Emergency
I have a one year lease with an apartment that I have been in since February 2007. In June and again now in August my car has been stolen from in front of the apartment, with police records. I also have a father in the final stages of COPD/Emphasema and have a letter from the DR stating that he needs continuous care and I have to move home. Am I covered under the law to be able to break the lease without being penalized?

    Thanks
    KE

Since you don't say where you are, we can't check the laws. You can do that yourself, there are links in the note at the top of this forum.

Having your car stolen is not grounds, unless the apartment is supposed to provide security for the parking areas. A family emergency may or may not be grounds. Needing to move home to care for a parent would usually not qualify.

Does your lease permit sublets? Have you tried talking to the landlord, maybe offer a buyout?

NO * there are agencies that will provide the care your father needs with TRAINED PROFESSIONALS. You should check with medicare/medicade and social security.

Did you check the link to Florida laws like I suggested?
