Partially because the society being established was not the society already there. It is being conquered and being forced to adapt and adopt a culture that is foreign.
If you draw a comparison between the american colonies and the Caribbean colonies there a few main differences:Quote:

The main difference in uses of the two colonies of course was money: the Caribbean was largely a more profit orientated social structure whereas in the Americas it was orientated toward creating a society.
