MY vehicle was running fine until one wire that was leading to my stereo burned up. As I don't know what this has to do with my starter, what could the problem be. The engine sounds like it wants to turn over, but isn't actually starting.

Check the alternator
Check where the power wire for the stereo was hooked in. There's good chance that fuse got taken out when the wiring problem occurred.
When you turn the key on, that circuit may be still shorted and pulling the battery down with it.
Check all under-dash and under-hood fuses with a test light or multimeter. Here's how:
