I'm 21 years old and have been having fairly regular periods. But lately I've been getting brown spotting for 2-3 days before actually getting my periods, which are still regular. I also get my usual menstrual cramps when I get this brown spotting itself. The brown spotting is also smelly and itchy. I'm not sexually active. I've had an ultrasound done before when the brown spotting first started a year ago, which showed a small ovarian cyst which was said to be just a functional cyst. After that, the spotting stopped and now has returned for the past 2 months. So do I have reason to worry about this brown spotting?

Get more tests done. Are you on the pill? If so, and you missed a few doses, brown spotting is not uncommon in-between periods. However, if it's smelly and itchy, you may have an infection that needs to be treated (and can be treated). But don't wait. Some diseases don't show any symptoms. It could be something minor, like a bacterial infection, but it might be something more. Don't worry - your dr. will figure it out. Good luck!
