I have done some research and at one time even bought one of the shower kits that are ready to be installed.

The problem I have is that drain pipe does not come in to the center of the drain pan and so I can't use it. So I returned it.

I have decided to do a custom base.
I have done some reading and am a little confused. I need to make the base which I will do with wooden 2x4's and then cover them with cement board and then fill in the base with cement and taper it to the drain pipe. I am not sure what type of drain outlet to use. Some sites suggest using a type of waterproof substraight over the concrete before I the layer of tiles on top. I am not sure what to use. Also will then use cement board on the walls which will be mounted on studs. I am not sure if I need to insulate behind the cement board.

any suggestions to a site with the step by step would be great else just down to earth advise is great,

Check out "The Journal of Light Construction". You may have to buy a back issue, but they have step by step articles on doing a custom shower pan and proper way to do walls. There are right ways and wrong ways, and the wrong way will rot in the future. Remember that concrete and concrete boards are not waterproof, so you have to protect the wood behind.

Even many of today's pro's don't bother to do it the proper way. This is something you can do yourself, but you have to pay attention to detail.
