    Microsoft message- error
Hi all, I have right smack in the middle of my screen a Microsoft.NET.Framework message that reads " An unhandled exception has occured in a componant in you application. Click continue and application will ignore this error and attempt to continue. Object reference not set to an instance of an object" I haven't a clue what this is and I have tried restarting to get rid but it came back up after about 5 minutes and clicking on the x doesn't get rid of it. Also underneath the message there is a continue button which when pressed makes no difference either. Could anyone advise please. Thanks Richard

Sounds like you .NET has gone TU.
Now time to make sure you system is fully patched as .NET as been updated.
    This should resolve this issue.

Failing that you could simply uninstall it via add/remove route.

    Thanks Richard

Hi curlyben, I don't understand .NET has gone TU. Also I can't remove via the uninstall because the message is right in the way of that option so I cannot click on the uninstall option

    OK no worries.
.NET is another of Micor$oft's bright ideas and it's functionality is used by various programs.
TU means Tits Up as in bust.

Head over to Windows update: Microsoft Windows Update and grab the .NET updates.
They are in the software:Optional section.
    We're currently on .NET 3.0

I went to updates and chose .NET 3.0 but yet again the "run" box is behind the bloody message so I couldn't download it.

In that case can you boot into safe mode and remove .NET from there.

Just after the manufacture screen and BEFORE the XP screen press F8 repeatedly.
This will allow acces to Safe Mode.

Hi, I have attempted to do a number of things with no luck. I cannot get the PC to turn off in the normal manner so I had to turn off at the wall. When I tried to start in safe mode, no luck there either. When the screen comes up the highlighted box is "normal mode" but the directional arrows won't move up to safe mode. I have never had this trouble before using safe mode. Would it be any use doing a system restore?

A system restore may help, certainly worth a try.
Failing that the next course of action is a repair install of your OS.

HI, I tried a system restore but no luck there. I then uninstalled .NET 1.1 and .NET 2, then installed .NET 3.0 with the same result.

Have you tried completely removing .NET as it's not really needed.

Hi, thanks to you and your advise it looks like I have cured the problem. I did as you said and uninstalled .NET and so far it hasn't popped up again. The only problem I have now is rating your answer, all I get is "you must spread some reputation round before contacting curlyben" So for now take is as I am more than happy with your help and quick responses.
    All the best Richard
