You're going to have to ask him. With shy people it's really hard to tell, and going and asking his friend will not work. Trust me. Just talk to him alone again or walking down the hallways when no one else can hear you and ask him if he likes you because you've been getting the vibe that he does. See what he says and pay attention to his response and the way he acts when he says it. If he does like you say "Well were you planning on asking me out anytime soon?" And then try to make plans for the two of you to hang out.
