My husband had 3 surgical extractions done on the 2nd of Aug. (of wisdom teeth). He was under IV sedation. He has had trouble healing in general from this (still nowhere near where he should be, healing wise), and has a rather strange problem since the surgery... he has pretty much lost his voice. The dentist doesn't have an explanation, he did say they "vaccuumed" his throat at some point in the procedure if that had anything to do with it. So question is, what could be going on with his voice/throat? It's been over 2 weeks and we're getting worried.

I'm truly puzzled about this. Have you seen your MD about it?

This could have something to do with it. Sorry Flossie, don't mean to override you as I know NOTHING about dentistry, however, if they did indeed vaccuum or suction his throat and knicked his vocal cords, this could be the culprit.

He needs to see an ENT to have this checked out.

The dentist put him on steroids to see if that helps. He has one more day left of the steroids. He has had an improvement in his voice, but is not normal by any means. He has another visit to the dentist this week and if it's not better by then, and the dentist still can't offer an explanation, we will have him see an ENT specialist. I should also note he has quite a nasty discharge from his throat, a mucous-pus like thing, definitely not regular mucous, and it seems to come straight from his throat (not coughing it up). I also thought that maybe the dentist had nicked something, but I wasn't sure about the "anatomy" of the throat, if just messing around in there would cause such a loss in voice.

If we end up going to an ENT and find out what happened, I'll post it in case someone else has a similar problem. If it just goes away on it's own, then I guess we're out of luck for an explanation!

They sure went way down his throat to suction it to knick the vocal chords... was it because the tooth fell back there? It could possibly be the suctioning that did it... sounds like he should be on an antibiotic if there's a pus-like discharge. I still have never heard of this happening before.

How is your husband doing? Does he have his voice back?
