How do I get roots out of my basement drain without paying a lot of money? Also, is there any type of device that I can rent to do it myself and howmuch will it cost?

I don't know how much it would cost because that greatly depends on the prices where you live. But, I do know that a lot of rental places will rent out devices that run off electrical power that are made to clear drains of debris.
Maybe someone else with a more specific answer though with some knowledge of what such a device might cost to rent.
All I can say is when it comes to sewage, the $200 and change it might cost to have someone do it right is small change.
In my area the plumbing for the homes often used orageburg... which is a tar paper pipe. Compresses over time and roots get in it like mad. If someone without a clue ran something down the line, they could chop it all to hell. Then you are looking at over $3000 of work.
Wait for the experts to chime in here, but I think $200-300 is money well spent to keep sewage out of a basement and to not make a potentially big mistake.
