    Priming water pumps
How can I prime my home water pump? It is similar to a swimming pool pump.

If this is a home water pump for a well like I have you can take the cap off the top and let a hose run water into it until it's full, which is the really long way or if you have a neighbor who is really nice you can run a garden hose from their hose outlet to yours (you'll need a piece to make sure that both ends are the same and attach properly). Just run the water backwards through the line until the pump is primed. I learned this lesson the hard way when my whole house was out of water thanks to the water heater man who didn't shut off the inlet and let all of the water in my home pipes drain out. Hopefully this is what you were looking for :)

My well has a little gray box near the well head about 4 inches long by 2 wide on it is a silver lever, when the pump needs to be hand primed if the power has been off a while or such I hold the lever halfway up and you hear a hum, that's the tank filling when it is ready you can let go and the pump will run on its own. I usually have to wait a fe min. and turn on an outside hose to be sure the tank filed and the pump is running because our well pump runs totally silent. An old one I had years ago you could hear when it kicked on.
I don't know if this is good for the points or whatever in the box on the well but this is how I was taught to do it.

Most surface pumps have a small threaded opening on top of the impeller cage. This opening may have a plug or a gage in it, but remove it and fill the impelllere cage and , if the check valve's OK. The pump should pull prime when you turn it back on. Good luck, tom
