I have Windows ME on a Intel Pentiem Celeron 600GH which Ive had for 4 years (quite ancient now I know!)

A few days ago I noticed it wouldn't open the MY DOCUMENTS folder I had to keep restarting the computer... I have now also come across WORD won't open or it takes ages to open, and also the compter won't shutdown properly I have to keep switching it off, it no longer performs the SCANDISK... when I press CONTROL-ALT- DELETE to try to restart it Ive noticed every time now that it says
Msgsru32 not responding ever since this message started appearing I have had a problem.

I don't have that much stored on my computer... but its suddenly become slower.. even when Im typing it moves slowly.. I haven't installed anything new Ive checked for any viruses or errors but nothing shows... is my computer just giving up? Or could it be WINDOWS ME it self?

I do have a RESTORE CD that contains a recovery version of WINDOWS ME that came with my computer when I bought it... but I know this is really as a last resort... does anyone have any ideas what it could be? Id rather see if I can solve the problem first before using the RESTORE CD... :-/

You may have viruses or spyware on your computer which would make it slower. To get rid of viruses of course u use an anti-virus. I found a very good free 1 at www.grisoft.com. To get rid of spyware I use ad-aware. I find that depending on how much it removes you can actually get quite a dramatic improvement in system performance. I worked on a computer today and took the system performance from 33% to 67% when running no programs besides what booted on startup.

I would try reinstalling Windows ME from the .cab files that should have been stored on the hard drive from the computer manufacturer/builder. Go to start, run, browse to: C:\windows\options\install and then click on setup.exe to reinstall windows me without the use of any CD whatsoever.

I will tell anyone here that if they are experiencing Windows ME problems, instead of wasting time working with it, to fix it, get another OS, WinXP or go back 98SE anything except WINME, it's the worst operating system ever made,
Microsoft admits this and has therefore stopped all technical support to this product,as they suggest you get rid of it themselves, that should tell you how bad it is, get something more stable.

Yeah... for $100 the poster could go to XP... or, for the same price, get a new computer.

If you can get a good solid computer that can do the things that most people need on a computer for $100, please show me where I can buy one, I could use a couple of extra ones around the house.

So whoever made that comment, what OS do you use, and how much did you pay for yours.

An OS is something you have to have, so why not have a good one.

And WinXp may not be perfect, but it's the newest thing available and most widely used.

And if you know a college student, get one to purchase a copy of WinXp for you at their college store for under $10, or if you feel you just can't pay for it, download it illegally from one of many place available.
