Hello plumbing genius!
I am new to the AskMe Helpdesk but I have read many of your other threads and it sounds like you know what you are talking about. I bought a money pit of a house made in 1959, and it seems like when I want to fix something pretty simple, it turns into a long and drawn out process that usually ends in a much bigger project then originally thought.
Anyway. I was replacing an older toilet wax ring. Simple enough.
I removed the toilet to see that the cast iron pipe under was rotting. So I called my construction buddy who had done some plumbing for me in the past over to take a look at it and give me his best advice.
Looking at it we thought that it would be in the best interest to replace the cast iron from the flange to the nearest cast iron bell. So we took off the cast iron to the nearest bell.
Now what we are proposing for a fix is to replace the cast iron with PVC. The problem is is the fact that the cast iron is 4 in and the inside measurements of the bell is 5 inches.
So we thought that we'd go to the store and buy a rubber donut that goes from 4 in to 3 in and place that donut into the bell and replace all the rest of the missing cast iron with 3 in PVC. Well the rubber donut that goes from 4in to 3in does not fit in the 5 (maybe 5 1/4 in) cast iron bell.
So is there any such thing as a 5in to 3in rubber donut, or if there is someway that we can make the 5 in cast iron bell into a 4 in opening so that we can use the 4 in to 3in rubber donut to connect the PVC.
So what is your advice? Thank you for your time.
