    Heat Pump
I live in Fl and have an inside air handler and outside heat pump. The heat pump quit working. When I went to the circuit breakers I hit reset and then switched the breaker on and sparks were seen around the breaker. It did not stay on. I have an electrician coming today but my question is does this sound like it's the breaker or do you think it's the heat pump or is it a combination of both?

In the past when I have encountered this it is because of something grounded. ( burnt out)
Need to check in the outdoor unit for a ground, use an OHM meter and it should be easy to find. The electrican can check for this if he can't then call an A/C person. You can save a service call by calling the A/C person and not the electrican. Good luck, Mike

The electrican can't repair the A/C but the A/C person can replace the breaker if it is bad and you will need the A/C person if it is the compressor or motor that is grounded.

Sounds like the outside unit has some bad wires. Maybe a short or something has shorted out. Have him check the contacts at the compressor. I have seen these corroded very badly over time and will cause this for sure.
