We bought a house about four months ago and the line from the house to the septic (4") has stopped up at least 3 times. I used a very flexible "snake" to unstop it the first two times and it worked for awhile. The last time, I used a very heavy duty "snake" to purge the line. I finally got through and a hard white substance (looked like a lime or calcium deposit) came out--and not just a small amount but a large amount--about the size of a baseball and then smaller pieces. Any idea what it was and how I can keep it from forming in the future?

Hard to say what this material is and maybe it is entirely something the previous owner dumped into the drain. I would not worry too much about preventing this in the future, just watch what you through down the drain. Cigarette butts, garbages dispoosal, corn silk, paint thinner, bleach, joint compound are all no nos for a septic.
