What can I do with an art degree?
I have always loved art and always wanted to go to an art school since I was a kid. But when I asked my mom what I could actually do- she told me they would tell me once I got there. Now that I am in Herron school of art and design. My options they give me are an art teacher or to work at an art museum. I looked into new media- to do animation, but I hate technology- I work better hands on. I wanted to do set design for plays and stuff but I don't know if I can do that with just a fine arts degree. They do have a major specifically for that at a school I can transfer to but I would have to take math classes, which would make my GPA drop. I just don't know what else there is for me. All I like is art, that's the only thing I will be happy with doing- but I will not just be an artist and not have a real job. I may settle for being a teacher but I never wanted to do that and they don't make much- especially art teachers!

Whatever you do, don't "settle" to be a teacher! Children need individuals who are highly devoted and LOVE their job; so do those kiddos a favor and don't be a teacher unless you REALLY REALLY want to. We have enough so so teachers in the world already. Check out this website: 138 Things to Do with a Degree in the Arts

I googled and found a site (What Can You Do With a Degree in Fine Arts?) that lists these:

    Artist
    Entrepreneur
    Printmaker
    Photographer
    Conservator
    Curatorial Assistant
    Public Relations (museum, art gallery)
    Exhibit Designer
    Archivist Registrar (museum)
    Art Therapist
    Writer/Critic
    Art Agent/Consultant
    Art Transporter or Handler
    Framer
    Medical Illustrator
    Art Supply Salesperson

I know from being a counselor that hospitals, VA hospitals, mental wards and institutions, school districts, nursing homes and assisted living facilities, retirement communities, and others often employ or use the services of an art therapist. If you like people, think about that path.

Also, police departments, museums, science academies use artists to reconstruct how a person or animal once looked based on a skeleton or skull shape. That might be interesting. Of course, you would have to apprentice yourself to someone already in the field, or work in other capacities first.

    Think creatively!!

I just wanted to say that the two answers above are excellent! I couldn't "spread the love" on each of the two answers because the system wouldn't let me.

Art teacher I reckon would be such an amazing thing to be, getting to teach and help and mould all those young new talents who may one day amaze the art world (my art teacher is awesome, and some of the other students in the art class I'm in are so talented, I reckon at least one of them will be famous someday)
