A narcissist loves him or her self, self absorbed, to the point that the person cares most for his own person over anyone else. Some narcissism is healthy but, as with everything, this can be overdone and then becomes a psychological disorder.

Actually, a narcissist HATES himself and is constantly looking for assurances that he/she is OK and is worthy of love.

(I spent $$$ and three years in psych grad school to find that out.)

Do either of these definitions seem correct?

-egotistic: characteristic of those having an inflated idea of their own importance

-Narcissism is the pattern of characteristics and behaviors which involve infatuation and obsession with one's self to the exclusion of others and the egotistic and ruthless pursuit of one's gratification, dominance and ambition. In everyday use outside the field of psychology, the word generally refers to people who just are inordinately fond of themselves, without the pathological connotations.
