Hi hope someone can offer me some advice. Went to my dentist over 6 months ago for a filling. He thought it would probably need a crown, then decided to have a go at a filling. All went wrong and I was in pain after 10 minutes. He decided to try root canal treatment (back molar next to wisdom tooth on upper jaw), still in pain. Sent me to a root canal specialist, he found 2 other roots and treated them. After a couple of days, pain returned, constant nagging, gets worse as day progresses and after you eat. He checked his root work, all OK, then said I had deep pockets nearby which needed treating and then crowning. Went to his recommended dentist, he did 2 specialist cleans of all teeth, then sent me to specialist who has just done deep pocket treatment on bottom jaw and tooth lengthening on problem tooth. It is still early days but whilst bottom jaw has only discomfort, the old familiar pain in the problem tooth has returned with a vengeance and of course at the moment I can't clean round it. Any advice? Any crown will take another minimum 6 weeks and will this cure the problem. It is now over 6 months with constant pain, should I cut my losses and go for extraction, and if so, the wisdom tooth as well as problem tooth? Please any help and advice, don't know what to do. I am so sorry to hear about this; tooth pain is as bad as an earache. I am currently undergoing extractions of my teeth, preparing for dentures. My gums have recessed so far, there is nothing left to do. Every tooth I have either has a filling, or a root canal, or a cap on it... been there, done that!
You have gotten about all the professional advise you can get; so I will offer some non-professional advise.
Have the tooth pulled!
Then, you might have to ask about a "bridge" (false tooth) placed in it's place; so your other teeth will not go out of alignment.
I hope all works out well for you. There is a definite problem with that tooth, and if nothing else will get rid of the pain, then have it extracted.
I had to have one extract many years ago, due to pain that would not go away, and had a "bridge tooth" installed. It was then OK at that time.

I am also preparing for dentures. I have tried to do everything that I can to prevent this from happening .But there is nothing I can do either but get all of my teeth pulled out and get dentures too.oh am I scared?. :eek: HELL YEAH! But all I can think about is if I get this done than ,than I won't have to go throw the pain ever again... thank god! :D

Dentist shouldn't mess when there's not a lot wrong.

I just made a Google search for "painful teeth after crown work" and lo and behold I`m in great company.I'm not very good at saying no but I had my doubts when the dentist said that 1, possibly 2 fillings were 2 big (so what) so why not have crown(s).Ok one of the teeth was slightly chipped but now I feel as if I'm chewing silver foil and strapped in that dentist chair in Marathon Man!
No way was ths worth the pain a week after the operation.I'm going to roast him when I see him especially since he wants £450 for each crown 1 of which will be gold.He said to me it's normal for a bit of sensitivity a few days after but didn't say it would spread to my front teeth and other teeth.Why and what's going on ?I took 4 Ibuprofen (400mg)last night and thank God the pain subsided.Going to Cuba tomorrrow where you have to bring your own toilet roll so will have to have a suitcase full of Ibu.Let me know if yours has now disappeared.Thanks.

If you are concerned about having all your teeth pulled out, then I offer this advice.
I recently had all my bottom teeth extracted, then 3 weeks later, had all top extracted. I had very badly recessed gums, showing the teeth roots, with no other options; except getting dentures.
The dentist prescribed two pills, Halcion, to take 1 hr before the appointment. Then, in the chair, gave me Nitrous Oxide gas.
I do NOT remember anything after I sat down in that chair! No pain. My wife drove me home, and I slept for 8 hrs after.
Same thing with my 2nd. visit, having all top teeth extracted.
Putting me to sleep was not an option, since this would have to be done in a hospital setting.
Now, in about 3 more weeks, am ready for my first dental impressions to be made.
If getting dentures are your only option, and you don't want to be put to sleep, then the above worked GREAT for me.
