I Have a linksys router connected to a 1mb dsl line, and several pcs connected to it.

at least once a day (at seemingly random intervals) anything using the http protocol (ie, Firefox or the rss feeds and trackers in my bittorrent client) can't access anything.

I get the same messages as if there were no connection at all but there clearly is because I am downloading through the bittorrent client. (it happens when bt is'nt running also, so that's not the problem)

in order to fix this I have to go to my router at 192.168.1.1 and just hit save changes (without making any btw) and then it works again.

I have had this problem with several isps, routers and computers. I have also tried changing my dns provider to opendns I have tried accessing secure http sites (https://) because I was told they use a different port to regular http I have flushed the dns on my PC. I have been putting up with this for years.

I have scoured the web looking for a solution but so far no luck.

what could be causing this?

and how do I fix it for good?

About the only thing that's consistent in that list is your network. You are probably running some software (either known or unknown) on one of the computers that's causing problems.

When you close down your bittorrent client do you exit out of the software or just close it down? If you don't exit completely you are leaving it open and any torrents you are seeding are being downloaded by other peers. Depending on how you have your client configured, that could easily be consuming all your upstream bandwidth.

If there's more than one computer running on the network then unplug them all except one... can you make it though the day w/o having to reboot the router?
Try just having one computer a day plugged in to the router if that's at all possible. You've changed everything else (isp, router, etc... ) so it's most likely a computer on your network that is causing the problem.

The HTTP protocol uses port 80, https uses 443 but not all places will support https.

Also, what do the logs in your router say?

Check the system logs on the different PC's and see if you can spot anything in there. Clear them out if you can't find anything and then check them again after you've had to fix the problem again... it might be easier to spot something then.

When you save the changes in your router it's probably rebooting and clearing everything out which is why, even though you don't change anything, doing that works. Cycling the power would probably accomplish the same thing.
