Is child support in my future?
Will I have to pay child support for a child that might be mine?A married couple have a thirteen year old girl that the wife say,s I might be the father.I am married w/ a 9 year old girl ,four year old boy, and my wife of 10 years is four months pregnant with our third and final child. Two weeks after I found she was pregnant I get a phone call that turned my world upside down.My wife accsepts the fact that it might be true and if the child is mine I would do what I can without going over anybodies head to be part of that child's life if she wants to.But I feel nervus because I don't know the couples intentions or what type of defense I have against the courts if any!

Well I would make 100% certain that you are the father which would include a paternity test. At this point in the game she may just ask for you to agree to relinquish rights and allow her husband to adopt the child.

Is she saying she wants to take you to court for child support et al? Or did she simply call saying this may be a possibility? If it's the latter then she may just want to find out if its you or not. I wouldn't stress until after the paternity test. No use getting worked up over something you don't know the answer to.

If she is proven to be yours you will have to pay. That is if child support is sought. They can even go back to the time of birth to present. That usually requires for you to pay the weekly amount plus a certain amount on the back support that you owe.

Where do you live in? Some states allow not only future support but and retroactive one. Other states have limited time for paternity questioning. Were they married when the girl was born?

Geri, not all states allow paternity disestablishment. About a half of states adopted UPA and there is time limit /from 1 to 5 years/for paternity disestablishment. To be a biological father is not same as to be a legal father. The court may decide that too much time has passed and not to allow a paternity claim. It depends on where they live in.
