First you need to file an intent to Defend so they don't get a default judgement. Next you need to send the creditor a letter asking for verification of the debt. You go into court and make sure they produce veirifcation. If they don't you ask for a dismissal.
I believe court appointed lawyers are only in criminal cases, not civil. But you may be able to get a legal aid atty.

It doesn't matter that much. Go into court and ask the creditor rep if he works for the creditor (he has to) and if he has proof of the debt. If he doesn't ask the judge for a dismissal. If the judge asks you whether the debt is yours tell him you don't know since you haven't be given any validation of the debt.
