Have you tried baseball-card-values.com or you can sometimes contact a comic book store if they sell cards they might be able to guide you. There are also a few other sites that will tell you a ballpark figure for a small fee.

The public library has price guides to sports cards as well as for other types of collectibles (Beanie Babies, furniture, glassware, art, books, toys... ).

I just wanted to say, thank you for that suggestion! I myself have a toy I would like to know the value of. What section in the library can I find these guides?

It depends on how books in the library are cataloged. Where I work, the furniture price guides are with the furniture books, the toy price guides with the toy books, etc. Other libraries put the price guides all together as reference or to be checked out, or both. Your best bet is to go to the reference desk and ask a reference librarian to tell you how to find them.

Be sure to write down words that might be printed on the object, for proper identifying. Most price guides have a photo of each object and a description.

You could check eBay too. The only problem is, I've discovered after pulling all sorts of collectibles out of my grandparents' attic, is that you have to find a buyer for your collectible, and that buyer might not want to pay the "book price".
