My best friend lives in Los Angeles and gave her landlord a verbal notice that she was moving. Her husband tried "repairing" what I consider minor home repairs and ruined everything that he tried making them expensive to medium expensive to repair when the land lord sent a repairman around to paint, repair and recarpet the house. In addition, my friend became angry after giving notice and called a government agency, (I think building and safety) on the land lord on what she thought were safety problems. It has been two months now and even though my friend gave her notice she has not moved. Some of her friends gave her advice that does not seem to make any sense. I.E. She sent the two months rent to the landlord registered mail or return receipt and they were returned. I can imagine what this does for my friend's credit and good name? Will she be able to rent another house without using her children's names and credit history? What should she have done?

Actually this may have no effect on her credit history. Most landlords don't report tenant issues to the credit bureaus. However, it might cause a problem if a prospective landlord goes to the previous one for a reference. Alos, if she is evicted that might also cause a problem.

I would move ASAP and be upfront with prospective landlords about the problem she had.

Thanks for the advice. It seems like I no brainer to me too. Of all of her friends she listened to the rest. I've known her for forty years and have never known her to let something like this happen. I think that it all boils down to the reason for screening your roommates or spouses.
