Check engine light on. I called toyota place and they said 70 bucks to check for code, someone told me Autozone does this free, they do! Code is 071 too lean. Guy starts rattlin off 25 different things that could be wrong, tells me to get a propane torch and put it to all my hoses and if my engine revs up then I've found one of my problems...
Any body have a good idea where I could start, don't really want to pay toyota place 5 or 6 hundred bucks to do some checks that I could do if I knew where to start.

The problem may involve the Oxygen Sensor, which controls fuel injector duration. If the duration is too short, it can create a lean burn situation. Another possibility is the Mass Airflow (MAF) Sensor, which helps regulate air/fuel ratios.

Have you installed an air induction system? Be sure and stay away from oil-impregnated air filters--they can play havoc with MAF Sensors--use pleated air filters, instead.

Hi, p0171 system too lean is what you have. You need to change out the mass air flow sensor (MAF). It's dirty and a new one will get you all fixed up. StAY AWAY FROM k&n AIR FILTERS OR ANY OF 'EM CHARGED WITH OIL.

I'm back... I've been driving with the check engine light on since this post and I ask everyone that knows a thing or two about a thing or two and it's still a guessing game between oxygen sensor/MAF sensor. Well today on my drive to work I think my truck is trying to tell me it needs help ! It started running like it had some really bad gas. Takes me half a mile to get up to 45mph. I'm pretty tight on money(wife/daughter in college/daugter with new drivers license!! ) that is the reason I've kept putting this off, I just wanted to check back in and see if anyone had any other ideas. If not I'm going to take her to TOYOTA tomorrow evening. Again thanks for the help and advice you guys/gals give out.

I gave you my best answer on the last post. With the CEL on, your engine never goes into closed loop, meaning the monitors never 'set'.
You suffer greatly in MPG and performance which you are now just learning about the perf part.

Kitch is right: replace the Mass Airflow Sensor (MAF)
You could try cleaning the sensor wire itself with a judicious blast of air to see if that clears up the problem temporarily!
If it does, spring for a new one. They aren't inexpensive, but they are vital to good fuel economy!
