    Chances of twins
    Hello,

I'm 6 weeks pregnant, very happy about this, also worried because, you know, it is still very early days. However, my head seems incapable of staying put and keeps running away with all sorts of daydreams and fantasies about what my baby will look like. Recently I've been daydreaming about having twins. I know they can happen when someone has been having IVF treatment, which I haven't been. But twins do run in our family: my grandfather was a twin and my cousins are twins so I was wondering whether there was a chance that I could be carrying two. I'm sure there is some kind of genetic pattern, but I don't know very much about it. Can anyone fill me in?

    Thanks :)

Well I'm sure there is a chance but you honestly won't be able to tell for a while. Have you been having really strong pregnancy symptoms?

I just read that 30.1 in 1000 births are twins.

Here is a little article for you on increasing/decreasing your chances of having twins : Odds of Twins - Increase Your Odds of Having Twins or Multiples

I hope this answers some of your concerns :)

Identical twins are a completely random occurrence because a fertilized egg has to spontaneously split in half for two babies to form.
Fraternal twins are more probable, but its rare because two eggs have to drop during one ovulation and both become fertilized. This type of twin has a higher chance of running in families because some women are genetically geared to ovulate more eggs more often while most will loose only one egg per cycle.

Basically, its possible for everyone! :)

You might want to ask Myth about this question, she had twins and did a lot of researching on it. She might be able to shed some more light on what to look for.congrats on the pregnancy good luck

First, congrats on your pregnancy! I understand about your worry and fears. I am at 9 weeks and can't wait to be done with this first trimester so that maybe my worries will drop a little.
I have heard that some women that have twins have stronger pregnancy symptoms, however I am not sure if this is the case in all multiple pregnancies. You really won't know for sure until that first ultrasound. I had an ultrasound at 8 weeks and could see the little one (and there was only one).
I agree with buggage that you should ask myth about this because she has first hand experience with the twins.
Best of luck in you pregnancy. Keep us updated on what is going on.
