I recently went to a periodontist for a consultation for crown lengthening, and was told that aside from cutting gum away, he will have to take some bone as well. What is the recovery prognosis for something like this? Is there a chance that I will have chronic pain / sensitivity on the 2 teeth being effected by the surgery forever with something like this?

I am think about extraction rather than going through with this. Any advice?

How old are you?
That could have a bearing on whether to pull teeth or not. If you have it pulled, it will need replacing with a tooth "bridge", to keep the remaining teeth from become mis-aligned and causing bite problems, as well as other problems.
See another dentist, get another opinion.
Gum disease does cause bone loss, as in my case.
I would really get another opinion, and then be honest with your dentist, asking what he/she suggests.
A root canal on the tooth, removing all tooth nerve, and help stop later pain associated with the tooth and gums.

I think the real question is why your periodontist is requiring crown lengthening surgery in the first place. This procedure is done normally to allow enough space for a crown margin not to invade biologic width (aprox 2mm) between the crown margin and alveolar bone height.

If you are not having a crown place, you do not need this procedure.

As for post operative consequences, it is not normal to have any post - operative sensitivity or pain in the site of the surgery.

I just had this done two weeks ago. I needed more tooth exposed in order to place the post and crown. It took about 45mn and wasn't that bad. Afterwards I had a few stitches and went back about a week later to have them removed.

After the initial procedure it was a tad sore, Tylenol helps but that's about it.

Now I just need to use this special tooth brush in that area to keep the gum in position for the post and crown next week.
