    Banging Pipes
    Hi,

We purchased a house a little over a month ago. The house was built in 1999. It is a 2 story house and in the bathroom on the 2nd level, when you turn on the faucet in the sink either all the way to hot or all the way to cold (it is a one handled faucet), the pipes make a loud banging noise. If the faucet handle is on and in the middle (mixing the water) there is no banging. We have not noticed any banging on any other faucets in the house nor the tub faucet or toilet that are in the same bathroom. Any suggestions as to what might be causing it. Our water does have pretty high pressure, as one of our neighbors told us they had a pressure regulator installed. We do not know the exact pressure yet, but we will be checking this, because we noticed that the previous owner's water bills were
A little on the high side. Thanks for any input!:) Oh, by the way the pipes only make the banging noise when the water is on, not when it is shut off.

    Thanks
    B

To me it sounds like a problem in the faucet and maybe not in the pipes. Do you have separate cutoffs for the hot and cold water under the sink? If you do you might try turning the water down a bit with the valve under the sink, turn each one about the same amount. Keep turning them down until the noise stops or the water supply is not enough. Maybe it has something to do with the high pressure and this may stop it. Good luck.

I'm with letmetellya. Call the utilities company and ask what the street pressure is in your block. The average house pressure is 45 PSI. This can either be a little higher or lower but remember this. The higher the pressure the more strain it puts on the system. Time to consider installing a PRV, (pressure regulating valve). Good luck, Tom

Ok, I have called the city and they are going to come out a check the pressure at the street. If we were to have a plumber install a PRV, please give me an idea of what something like that might cost. I just would like a ballpark, so I can prepare to possibly have it done. I am not sure if this is something my husband would want to do himself or hire out.

    Thanks

When the water is going through the pipes for the heating system it makes a terrible loud banging noise. How can I fix this?
