    Temporary child custody
We have had temp custody of our granddaughter since she was born 14 yrs ago. Now her mother has decided that she wants her to move in with her, and has now gotten her father involved (they never married) (whom our granddaughter has never met and after 14 yrs has finally talked to him yesturday after years of her trying to get him to call her). They is no ending date on the temporary custody order. Where do we stand on this? Thanks,

You have had your grandaughter her entire life and I know you must love her. I would suggest you contact a family lawyer and see where this is going. It would be great to have her natural parents in her life but you are all she has known and it would be traumatic to change all that (for her).

I guess my one question is why during 14 years you did not file for full custody.

But at this point, you are lucky in that the child can testify in court, you will have to fight it out in court, so get the best attorney you can

The custody order stands unless it is modified by the court. The mother and/or father can petition the court to have it modified. Their motion may or may not be granted. The age of the child, the stability of her present situation and the fact that she's already been there for 14 years will all come into play. At first glance, I'd say that if you are providing a stable home with basic necessities and she wishes to remain with you, then the judge would probably not grant the parents' petition.
