My son has this feeling where his mind is blank. He can't think and feels like he has no emotion or thoughts in his head. He says he can't think of anything.
He is being treated with Olanzapine, Prozac, Clomazapam(spelling?), and
Bachlafen for another conditon.
Do you think the med will work to help with this ? How long do you think it will take to work? Any other suggestions?
If he is being treated for all of those meds I don't wonder he feels like his mind is blank.
What exactly is his diagnosis ?

This is a common side effect of the meds and will wear off over time.
iv'e ask for a diagnosis and I'm told that he can't say exactley what it is. He has delutions and high anxiety, paranoid,he used to have racing thoughts, they did say he might have aspergers. He is preoccupied with health he thinks he has a parasite living in him so he has had me take him to an infectious disease doctor, she did tests and told him he is fine and to see a phyciatrist.two neurologist said the same thing and family doc to.he thinks people are trying to poisen him. He has poisened my husband a couple times and my mother in law too.he started changing at around age17 he used to be a really loving son, I'm broken hearted he is intelligent but he can't understand what it is he has ,he begs me to help him, he has been in a mental health unit for 2weeks.sorry this is so long,thanks for your advice.Quote:

It sounds to me as though he may be schizophrenic. The delusions, paranoia, and all of the other symptoms you describe are very common in schizophrenia.

Yes he is in a mental health unit,he has been for 2 weeks. He's begging to come home. The doctor thinks whatever he has is manifesting and hasn't come all the way out.his doc just increased his olanzepine[anti phychotic] to 20mg. Because he's not responding. My son told me that he wished he were dead because his anxiety level is so high he can't stand it.what can I say to him to calm him down,I've tried, but nothing helps.
Very interesting that I suggested schizophrenia and he is on Olanzepine (Zyprexa) as it is used for schizophrenia as well as acute manic episodes in bipolar disorder. However, the particular delusions and paranoia he is having typically are not common with bipolar disorder, but are VERY common with schizophrenia.
If that does not work discuss the other antipsychotic med choices with his doctor. There are many I can give you a list if you like. But one that seems to be working particularly well is Risperidone.
Hun, you are in a very tough spot right now, you are used to nurturing your son and taking care of him, but right now you just don't have the right kind of experience for this big of a problem. He needs intense medication therapy that may include numerous medications. Finding the right mixture of meds can be like finding a needle in a haystack. It is a process that takes a while, so please be patient.
I know you have tried to help calm and soothe him, but nothing you can do will help until the medication begins to take effect. Has his doctor discussed limiting your visitation? Sometimes visiting alone is enough to disrupt the delicate balance that the doctors have worked to achieve, at least in the short-term.
You must also know that when, and if, he comes home, he will come home feeling somewhat better because the medication is working. I will warn you though that Non-Compliance of medical regime is VERY common among these patients because one of two things typically happens.
1) They don't like the fuzzy feeling the medication gives them, so they stop taking it. Bad idea as the medication is usually life long, but the side-effects are temporary; and
2) Once the medication has kicked in they think they are all better and no longer need their meds.
Once one of these two things happens and they decide for whichever of these reasons to stop taking medication, they are back to their delusions and paranoia, however, they tend to be worse.
There really isn't much to say to calm him other than telling him to give the medication and the doctors time to do their work.

I had a meeting with my sons doctor and case worker and they have come to a decision that he does have schizophrenia and he will go to a long term care facility. I am nervous about it, I hope they don't increase the zyprexa any more he is taking 20mg now and from what iv'e read this is the top dosage that was studied. The doctor mentioned he could go higher on the dosage,do you think I shoud say something? He is taking a conteractive drug already for the side effects. He has taken other anti phychotics and it seems that whenever they increase to the next level he gets tardive dyskanasia. He also had seizures with risperdol. He is starting to rock back and forth. I just want him to continue on the meds with no major side effects.thanks for all your help.

Wonderful! Thank you. He is on some very wonderful medications for his diagnosis. Looks like he is getting some very good treatment.
I am sorry to hear that he is moving to a long term care facility, but that really is best for him, and you, at this point in time.
